Starting a terrace garden in Chennai is easier than it looks. You need five things: containers, a good potting mix, seeds or seedlings, a way to water, and a little protection for your terrace. Here's a simple checklist.
1. Pick the right grow bag for each crop
- Keerai and coriander: wide, shallow trays or grow bags at least 6 inches deep
- Radish, beetroot and carrot: 10–12 inch deep bags (deeper for long radish and carrot)
- Chilli, okra and capsicum: 12–15 inch grow bags, one or two plants each
- Tomato, brinjal and cabbage: 15 inch grow bags, one plant each
- Gourds and melons: 18–24 inch grow bags, with a pandal or trellis for climbers
2. Fill with a light, rich potting mix
Mix garden soil, cocopeat and vermicompost in equal parts. Add a handful of neem cake for healthier roots. Fill each bag to about 1–2 inches below the rim.
3. Protect your terrace
Keep grow bags and pots off the terrace floor on a plant stand. This lets water drain freely and protects the floor from damp patches.
4. Choose easy seeds for your first season
Start with fast, forgiving crops: keerai (ready in 3–4 weeks), radish, okra, chilli, tomato and marigold. Check the sowing calendar for what to sow this month.
5. Water smartly
Water in the morning or evening. A simple drip kit saves time and water, and keeps plants alive while you travel.
6. Feed and protect
Feed every 2–3 weeks with compost or organic manure once plants are growing. Use neem oil and sticky traps at the first sign of pests.
