Pink Rain Lily Bulbs (Zephyranthes)

Pink rain lilies pop up in cheerful flushes a few days after a good rain. Plant a handful of bulbs in a sunny pot or border and enjoy six-petal pink stars with golden centres, again and again through the rainy months.

Planting guide

Step by step

1. Plant in groups – Tops of the bulbs 2.5 cm under the soil, 5–10 cm apart.
2. Sun & drainage – Full sun and a free-draining, organic mix; slightly pot-bound is best.
3. Dry, then soak – Let the mix dry, then water deeply – blooms follow in a few days.
4. Divide rarely – Clumps multiply on their own; divide every 4 years or so.

What to expect

1. Six-petal pink stars – Open wide at midday and close in the afternoon.
2. Golden anthers – Bright yellow centres that bees love.
3. New buds after rain – Each flower lasts a day or a few; more follow.

Safety: bulbs and tubers are not edible – keep them away from children and pets.
