Four easy flowering bulbs to plant as the rains arrive – fragrant tuberose (sampangi), the flame-like gloriosa (senganthal, Tamil Nadu's state flower) and pink and white rain lilies that bloom a few days after every good rain.

Tips

1. Plant at the right depth – tuberose and rain lilies 2.5 cm, gloriosa 6–8 cm.
2. Give them sun – all four flower best in a sunny, open spot.
3. Water, don't drown – moist but free-draining soil; bulbs rot in standing water.
4. Handle gloriosa with care – all parts are poisonous if eaten; wear gloves with the tubers.

Safety: bulbs and tubers are not edible – keep them away from children and pets.
