Red Amaryllis Bulb (Hippeastrum)

A big red amaryllis (Hippeastrum) bulb that puts on a show of giant trumpet flowers on a sturdy stalk. Pot it with the top half of the bulb above the soil and it flowers in about 6–8 weeks.

Step by step

1. Pot it high – Plant in a heavy 6–8 inch pot with half or more of the bulb above the soil.
2. Water once – Water thoroughly, then hold back until the flower stalk appears.
3. Give it sun – Move to direct sun after sprouting – flowers in 6–8 weeks.
4. After flowering – Cut the spent stalk; feed the leaves so the bulb blooms again.

What to expect

1. Huge red trumpets – Several open one after another, up to 15 cm across.
2. Tall flower stalk – Top-heavy – a heavy pot keeps it upright.
3. Bulb sits high – Half or more of the bulb stays above the soil.

Safety: bulbs and tubers are not edible – keep them away from children and pets.
