Step by step

1. Plant the bulb – About 5 cm deep with the neck just above the soil line.
2. Sun or part shade – Rich, moist but well-drained soil; a warm sunny wall is ideal.
3. Keep moist – Water regularly in the growing season; reduce as leaves fade.
4. Enjoy the scent – Umbels of 4–6 vanilla-scented white flowers.

What to expect

1. Spidery white flowers – Long ribbon petals around a delicate cup.
2. Staminal cup – A thin white cup joins the six stamens.
3. Glossy strap leaves – A lush clump even when not in flower.
